What is link exchange tracking?
Link exchange tracking is the practice of modeling the full lifecycle of a link partnership, from first reply through to live link and ongoing monitoring - capturing anchor text, target URL, placement URL, deal type, owner, and statuson both sides of the exchange. It replaces the "link in / link out" spreadsheet that breaks the moment your deals become more complex than a simple two-way swap.
Why a dedicated tracker
An A-B-C exchange has three sides. A 2:1 is asymmetric. A guest post has content AND a link. A spreadsheet column can't capture any of this cleanly, it just collapses into 'partner / URL / status'.
Why two-sided monitoring
Half of lost-link incidents are silent: anchor changes, rel changes, redirect to weak target. Your side and theirs need to be checked, the deal isn't 'live' just because both URLs exist.
What it replaces
Spreadsheets that lose state · Generic CRMs that don't understand links · 'Who is chasing this?' in standup · Manually checking 50 URLs in a browser tab once a month.
Who uses it
Agencies running 100+ deals across clients · In-house link builders managing partnerships · Solo specialists who can't afford a missed return link.
Deal Types
Eight deal types modeled directly, no forcing into one schema
Classic two-way swap. Your site links to theirs, theirs links to yours.
→ Two anchors. Two target URLs. Two placement URLs. Both monitored.
A-B-C
A-B-C Exchange
Triangle
Three-way swap to avoid reciprocal patterns. A links to B, B links to C, C links to A.
→ Three sites in the chain. LinkSwapy alerts if any leg breaks.
2:1
2-for-1 Exchange
Weighted
You give two links, they give one (or vice versa). Common when one side has more authority.
→ All three placements with the asymmetry recorded.
GP
Guest Post Exchange
Content + Link
You write a post for them, they write one for you. Track content + link separately on each side.
→ Post URL, content owner, anchor, link target, per side.
INS
Insertion Exchange
Existing posts
Add a link into an existing post on each side. Faster than guest posts, cleaner than new content.
→ Source post URL on both sides. Link position within page.
P-L
Partnership Link
Editorial
Editorial partnership where one side links unconditionally for relationship reasons.
→ Single direction, no return expected. Still monitored.
P+
Paid Plus Exchange
Hybrid
Hybrid: a paid placement that also includes a reciprocal link. Track both components.
→ Paid amount, invoice ref, both anchors, both placements.
NET
Network Exchange
Inside group
Linking inside a partner network or alliance, often with rotating placements.
→ Network ID, rotation schedule, every placement audited.

Silent Failures
The exchange failures spreadsheets miss
Six ways an exchange quietly fails after it goes live, and the reason a marketplace match is not a decision, the ones you only catch when the next Ahrefs report shows a drop.
Anchor bait and switch
Partner publishes with the agreed anchor, then quietly edits it to a generic 'click here' weeks later. LinkSwapy catches the change on the next sweep.
Quiet noindex addition
The page is still up. The link is still there. But meta robots changed to noindex, the link is invisible to Google.
301 to a weak target
Your target URL gets 301-redirected to a generic /resources page, diluting link equity. Detected automatically.
Removed without notice
Partner refreshes their post and drops the link. Most teams find out months later from an Ahrefs alert. LinkSwapy alerts you the next day.
Nofollow added post-publish
Partner site moves to bulk-nofollow on outbound links. Your link is still 'live' but no longer passes authority.
A-B-C chain breaks
In a three-way deal, one leg removing the link kills the whole exchange. LinkSwapy flags the broken leg + the deals affected.

8 deal types modeled
A-B, A-B-C, 2:1, guest post, insertion, partnership, paid-plus, network, each with the right field set.
Table + kanban views
Drag deals across Negotiating → Agreed → Content sent → Live. Both views stay in sync.
Both-side monitoring
Daily or weekly checks on supplier's link AND your return link. Drift on either side creates an alert.
Anchor + URL audit
Every deal records agreed anchor, target URL, suggested copy, and live placement URL with version history.
Owner + activity feed
Every deal has an owner. Handoffs are timestamped. 'Who's chasing this?' is answered without asking.
Per-project SLAs
Set max days in 'Negotiating' or 'Content sent' per project. Overdue deals surface automatically.
Lost-link recovery
When a link disappears, one click drafts a recovery email prefilled with the original deal terms.
A-B-C chain visualisation
See the triangle: who links to whom. LinkSwapy flags broken legs and the deals affected.
Full deal history
Every status change, anchor edit, and monitoring result is logged. Audit trail for client reports.
CSV + PDF export
Export raw data for finance, or generate branded PDF reports grouped by project / month / status.
Templates per deal type
Outreach templates pre-mapped to deal type. Pitching an A-B-C reads differently from pitching a 2:1.
Compliance signals
Auto-flag deals that drift toward link schemes, excessive reciprocity, low-quality networks, hidden niches.
vs. Spreadsheet and Generic CRM
Built for links, not for generic deals
A sheet captures static fields. A generic CRM models contacts. Neither understands anchors, rel attributes, or A-B-C chains.

Questions
Frequently asked questions
Everything teams ask before trusting exchange tracking to one tool.
What is a link exchange tracker?
A link exchange tracker is a system that models the full lifecycle of a link partnership, from first reply through to live link and ongoing monitoring, capturing anchor text, target URL, placement URL, deal type, owner, and status on both sides of the exchange. It replaces the 'link in / link out' spreadsheet that breaks the moment your deals become more complex than a simple two-way swap.
Can LinkSwapy track A-B-C three-way exchanges?
Yes. A-B-C exchanges are a first-class deal type in LinkSwapy. The full chain is modeled: which sites are in the triangle, which side gave what to whom, and an alert fires the moment any leg of the chain breaks. Most spreadsheets can't represent A-B-C cleanly, LinkSwapy does it in one record.
Which deal types does LinkSwapy support out of the box?
Eight: A-B (classic two-way swap), A-B-C (three-way), 2-for-1 (you give two, they give one), Guest post exchange, Insertion exchange (link inserted into an existing post on each side), Partnership link (editorial / relationship), Paid plus exchange (hybrid paid + reciprocal), and Network exchange (linking inside a partner network). Each type captures the right fields, guest posts track content + links separately, insertions track the source post URL, paid-plus tracks the paid amount.
What's the full status pipeline for a deal?
Eight stages: Draft → Negotiating → Agreed → Content sent → Awaiting publish → Supplier live → Return pending → Monitoring. From Monitoring, a deal can branch to Recovered (if a link was lost and restored), Renegotiated (if anchor or placement changes), or Canceled. Each transition is timestamped and attributable to a teammate.
How does LinkSwapy monitor both sides of an exchange?
Once a deal is Live, LinkSwapy checks the supplier's link and your return link on the cadence your plan supports (daily on Growth+, weekly on Starter). On each side it verifies the link exists, the anchor matches, the rel attribute hasn't changed to nofollow/UGC/sponsored, the link target hasn't been 301-redirected to a weak page, and the placement page is still indexable. Drift on either side creates an Alert tied to the deal record.
Can multiple teammates own different deals in the same project?
Yes. Every deal has an owner, and your team's Slack-style activity feed shows handoffs. When Sarah marks a deal Agreed and Marcus picks up Content sent, both names are attached to the deal forever, no more 'who's chasing this one?' in standup.
Can I see deals as a kanban pipeline like Trello?
Yes, the Deals page has both table and kanban views. Drag a deal across columns (Negotiating → Agreed → Content sent → Awaiting publish → Live). Filter by deal type, owner, project, supplier, or anchor. The kanban respects per-stage SLAs you set per project.
What happens when a partner removes their link without telling me?
LinkSwapy detects it on the next monitoring sweep, creates a Lost-link Alert tied to the deal, and surfaces it in the dashboard with the deal context (when it went live, what anchor was agreed, who the owner is, the contact email). One click drafts a recovery email from a template prefilled with the original deal terms.
How is this different from a generic CRM like HubSpot or a sheet?
A sheet captures a static field set ('partner', 'URL given', 'URL received'). A generic CRM models contacts and deals but doesn't understand link mechanics, anchor text, rel attributes, redirect chains, link drift. LinkSwapy is built for the actual unit of work: a link in a specific position on a specific page, with specific attributes, that needs to stay there.
Can I export deal data for client reports?
Yes. Export to CSV with every field (anchor, target URL, placement URL, type, status, dates, owner, notes), or generate a branded PDF report grouped by project / month / status. Both work without leaving the app.
